Alex Mackay is a musician and audio engineer working across forms of experimental and electroacoustic music, creating solo and collaborative works spanning recorded, live, installation and multimedia contexts.

Drawing upon their backgrounds in notated acoustic composition, computer music and electric guitar & synthesizer performance, their music is process-focused in its composition, performance and production - working with electronic and acoustic sound, pieces are constructed through iterative cycles; compositional structures of time and harmonic space expand and contract in tandem with physical processes initiated through projection of sound into spaces and materials, then captured, recycled and recaptured.

Their solo projects are informed by extensive collaborative relationships, including work as a recording and mixing engineer specialising in experimental music and sound art, and as touring multi-instrumentalist with Scottish band Mogwai.

They are currently undertaking doctoral research investigating evolving DIY practices and cultures in electroacoustic composition at the University of York, supported the Arts & Humanities Research Council UK through the White Rose College of Arts & Humanities.
